Mum so hard

Activities beat the negativities

When we were first plunged into pandemic mode, you’d better believe I spent a small fortune on crafting supplies, cooking supplies and crap with a capital C to try and occupy my toddler.

Cut to month nine of this garbage fire of a crisis and I have depleted all of my beautifully organized backstock (thank you The Home Edit). So, on the days when I’m home solo with both of my little nuggets, the hours can be long and my patience grows shorter with every passing minute.

Cue Instagram. More and more I find myself looking to social media for inspiration to pass the hours and keep my little lady learning and more importantly, occupied.

A friend and I joked at the park recently about how much our relationship with the app has changed. We used to use social media to post photos of our dogs and keep up with what was trending in celebrity fashion. Now, I literally scroll my feed to find the parenting equivalent of a fire extinguisher to calm the wildfire of toddler meltdowns and emotions.

Locally, I’ve started following @MyBusyToddlersandme. She posts great ideas to keep littles engaged with easy Montessori play activities. Another local gem is @HeartWombBreath. Kira posts positivity and realness about motherhood and is a yogi, doula and all-round badass woman to boot.

I am a huge fan of @BigLittleFeelings and @TakingCaraBabies too. I’ve purchased online courses from both accounts to tackle everything from toddler tantrums to the all-important, sleep training for babies. I can totally vouch for their products as we’ve seen remarkable success on both the sleep and behaviour fronts. Total game changers.

I never would have thought my go-to for parenting advice would be Instagram. But here we are. There is a whole world of help and support living on our phones, available 24/7. The more accounts I follow, the more gold I find. It’s almost like when you are going through a break-up and every song you hear is a GD love ballad….but more helpful.. and less depressing.

Now, off to go buy some pumpkins for my children to paint so I don’t have to risk lopping off limbs by carving them. Thanks Instragram!
